How Much Gravel Under Pavers?

Ask a hardscape crew why a paver patio failed and you will rarely hear "bad pavers." The answer is almost always underground: a base that was too thin, never compacted, or skipped entirely. The gravel under your pavers is the patio — the pretty stones on top are just the wearing surface.

Here is how much gravel a paver base actually takes, with the math worked out on a real patio so you can order once and order right.

How much gravel goes under pavers?

For patios and walkways, the standard is 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base, plus a 1 inch bedding layer of coarse sand that the pavers sit directly on. Four inches is fine on well-drained sandy soil; six inches is the safe call on clay or anywhere frost heave is a fact of life. A paver driveway is a different animal — 8 to 12 inches of compacted base, because point loads from tires are brutal.

Remember that the spec depth is measured after compaction. Six inches of loose stone tamps down to about four and a half, so you excavate and order for the loose volume, then compact your way to the finished spec.

The math on a 10x12 patio

Take a 10 by 12 foot patio — 120 square feet. A 6 inch compacted base needs 120 × 0.5 = 60 cubic feet of stone, which is about 2.2 cubic yards. But loose gravel shrinks 15 to 20 percent when you compact it, so order roughly 2.7 cubic yards, or about 4 tons if your supplier sells by weight. Using the tonnage shortcut — one ton covers about 100 square feet at 2 inches deep — 120 square feet at 6 inches works out to 3.6 tons before the compaction factor, and the same 4-plus tons after it. Both roads lead to the same truck.

The bedding sand is easier: 1 inch over 120 square feet is 10 cubic feet — about a third of a cubic yard, or half a ton. Buying bagged? That is twenty 0.5-cubic-foot bags. Use washed concrete sand, never play sand or fine masonry sand; the coarse grains are what let you screed a dead-flat bed that stays put underfoot.

Compaction is where the job is won

Spread the base in 2 to 3 inch lifts and run a plate compactor over each one until the stone stops moving — usually three or four passes per lift. Dumping all 6 inches at once and compacting only the top gives you a hard crust over a soft center, and the patio will tell you about it after the first winter. The stone should be lightly damp, not dusty and not muddy; a little moisture helps the fines bind.

Screed the sand last, the same day you lay pavers, using two 1-inch outside-diameter pipes as rails and a straight 2x4. Do not compact the sand bed itself — the final pass of the plate compactor over the laid pavers seats everything at once.

Mistakes that sink pavers

  1. Laying pavers on bare dirt or an inch of leftover gravel. There is no shortcut past the 4 to 6 inch compacted base.
  2. Using rounded river rock as base. It never locks — angular crushed stone with fines only.
  3. Screeding more than 1 inch of sand. Thick sand shifts under load, and the pavers follow it into waves.
  4. Forgetting slope. Pitch the finished surface 1/4 inch per foot away from the house — about 2.5 inches across a 10-foot patio.
  5. Skipping geotextile fabric on clay soil. Ten minutes of rolling out fabric prevents years of base contamination.

Order once, order right

Add it up for the sample patio and the shopping list is about 4 tons of crushed stone base, half a ton of concrete sand, fabric, and edge restraint. Bump everything 10 percent if the patio has curves or a lot of border cuts — the base needs to run a few inches past the paver field anyway.
